What is the Bagua Map?
The Bagua (pronounced bah-gwa) is an ancient energetic grid used in Feng Shui. Translated from Chinese, “Ba” means eight, and “Gua” means area. It is an octagonal energy map consisting of eight life areas surrounding a central, grounding ninth area.
Think of the Bagua as a blueprint or an energetic overlay. By placing this invisible grid over the floor plan of your entire house (or even over a single room, like your bedroom or home office), you can instantly diagnose why certain areas of your life feel stuck, and exactly where you need to make changes to fix them.
The Western vs. Traditional Bagua
There are two main schools of thought when applying the Bagua Map: the Traditional (Compass) School and the Western (BTB) School.
- Traditional Compass School: Uses a magnetic compass to align the map with cardinal directions (North, South, East, West).
- Western (BTB) School: Aligns the bottom edge of the map exclusively with the main entrance (the front door) of the home or room, regardless of true North.
For beginners looking for immediate, powerful results, we highly recommend the Western BTB School. It is intuitive, modern, and focuses heavily on the flow of Chi (energy) entering the space through the front door. We will be using this method for the rest of this guide.
How to Apply the Bagua Map to Your Home
Applying the map is incredibly simple once you understand the orientation. Follow these three steps:
Step 1: Sketch Your Layout
Draw a rough, top-down sketch of your entire home’s floor plan (or just the single room you want to evaluate). It doesn’t need to be architectural perfection; just get the general shape.
Step 2: Draw the Grid
Draw a tic-tac-toe grid over your sketch, dividing the space into nine equal squares (three rows of three).
Step 3: Align with the Front Door
Take the bottom row of your grid. The wall containing your main entrance (the front door to your house, or the main door to your bedroom) will always align with this bottom row.
- If your door is on the left side of that wall, it sits in the Knowledge/Skills corner.
- If your door is in the center of that wall, it sits in the Career/Life Path area.
- If your door is on the right side of that wall, it sits in the Helpful People/Travel corner.
Now that the map is locked into place based on your front door, let’s explore what each of the nine areas represents and how to activate them!
The 9 Areas of the Bagua Map
Every square on the grid has a specific meaning, an associated color, and a specific “Element” (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) that makes it thrive.
1. Career and Life Path (Center Bottom)
- Location: The middle square on the wall with your front door.
- Represents: Your job, your soul’s purpose, and the journey you are on in this lifetime.
- Element / Color: Water / Black and Dark Blue.
How to Activate It: If you feel lost in your career, clear this space immediately. Add a small water feature (like a tabletop fountain), hang artwork featuring rivers or oceans, or place a dark blue rug here. Mirrors are also excellent here, as they represent the element of water.
2. Knowledge and Self-Cultivation (Front Left)
- Location: The front-left corner (from the perspective of looking in from the front door).
- Represents: Wisdom, studying, self-improvement, and meditation.
- Element / Color: Earth / Dark Blue, Black, and Green.
How to Activate It: This is the absolute best place in your home for a bookshelf, a cozy reading chair, or a meditation altar. Keep this area quiet and peaceful. If you are a student or learning a new skill, study in this corner!
3. Helpful People and Travel (Front Right)
- Location: The front-right corner.
- Represents: Mentors, clients, supportive friends, and synchronicity (being in the right place at the right time).
- Element / Color: Metal / Gray, White, and Silver.
How to Activate It: If you feel isolated or need a mentor, focus here. This is a great place to keep your travel vision board, a globe, or silver/metal decor. Ringing a small silver bell in this corner activates the “Helpful People” energy.
4. Family and Physical Health (Middle Left)
- Location: The middle square on the left-hand wall.
- Represents: Your physical vitality, your ancestors, and the foundations of your family unit.
- Element / Color: Wood / Greens and Browns.
How to Activate It: This area thrives on vibrant, living energy. It is the perfect place to hang framed family photos (of happy, living relatives) and, most importantly, tall, healthy, upward-growing houseplants. (A dying plant here will literally drain your physical energy!)
5. Children and Creativity (Middle Right)
- Location: The middle square on the right-hand wall.
- Represents: Your offspring, inner child, joy, and creative output (art, writing, new projects).
- Element / Color: Metal / White and Pastels.
How to Activate It: If you are experiencing a creative block, clear the clutter here. Display your artwork, keep art supplies here, or place smooth, round metal objects in this space to stimulate new, playful energy.
6. Wealth and Prosperity (Back Left)
- Location: The far back-left corner of your home or room.
- Represents: Financial abundance, cash flow, and your feeling of “having enough.”
- Element / Color: Wood / Purple, Gold, and Green.
How to Activate It: This is the most famous corner in Feng Shui! To attract money, this corner must feel luxurious and vital. Add touches of purple or gold. This is the ultimate place for a lush, leafy “Money Tree” (Pachira aquatica) or a Jade Plant. Keep the toilet lid closed if your bathroom falls in this corner, or your finances will figuratively flush away!
7. Fame and Reputation (Center Back)
- Location: The middle square on the very back wall.
- Represents: How the world sees you, your reputation, and your legacy.
- Element / Color: Fire / Red.
How to Activate It: If you are starting a business or need to be recognized at work, light this area up! Use the color red, place tall floor lamps here, or keep your awards, diplomas, and press clippings displayed on this wall.
8. Love and Marriage (Back Right)
- Location: The far back-right corner.
- Represents: Romantic partnerships, deep self-love, and receiving affection.
- Element / Color: Earth / Pink, Red, and White.
How to Activate It: The rule of the Love Corner is pairs. Never keep single, lonely items here (like a single chair or a painting of one person). Place two matching rose quartz crystals, two matching bedside lamps, or a pair of soft, trailing plants (like Philodendrons) here to invite partnership.
9. The Center (Health and Grounding)
- Location: The exact center of the home or room (The Tai Chi).
- Represents: The grounding force that balances all the other eight areas.
- Element / Color: Earth / Yellow and Earth Tones.
How to Activate It: The center of your home should ideally be open and clear of heavy, obstructive furniture to allow energy to circulate to the other eight areas. A beautiful yellow rug or a low, square coffee table grounds this space beautifully.
Diagnosing Your Life Through Your Floor Plan
Now that you have your map, the real magic begins. Look at your floor plan and ask yourself these diagnostic questions:
Is there an area missing?
If you live in an L-shaped apartment, one of your Bagua areas will technically fall completely outside the walls of your home. This is called a “missing corner,” and it often explains lifelong struggles. For example, if your floor plan is missing the “Wealth” corner, you may constantly struggle to save money.
The Fix: You can “cure” a missing corner by placing a mirror on the wall where the corner should be, effectively expanding the space energetically.
Where is your clutter?
Clutter is the mortal enemy of Feng Shui. It traps heavy, stagnant Chi. Look at where you dump your mail, laundry, and junk. If your junk room is in the Love Corner, your relationships will feel chaotic and messy. If your closet is stuffed to the brim in the Career area, you will feel permanently “stuck” in your job. Clearing clutter from a specific Bagua area often yields immediate, miraculous shifts in that corresponding area of your life.
Where is the bathroom?
Bathrooms have drains, and drains pull energy out of a home. If a bathroom is in your Wealth corner, it represents wealth draining away.
The Fix: Always keep bathroom doors closed, keep the toilet lid down, and place an earth-element object (like a heavy ceramic pot or a bowl of sea salt) near the toilet to “dam” the draining water energy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do I apply the Bagua to my whole house, or just my bedroom?
Both! The macro-Bagua applies to the footprint of your entire home, dictating the grand energy of your life. However, you can also apply a micro-Bagua to individual rooms. If you rent a single room with roommates, or live in a tiny studio, applying the Bagua strictly to the footprint of your bedroom is highly effective.
My front door is in the corner, not the center. How does the map align?
Remember, the bottom row of the 3×3 grid always stretches across the entire wall containing the door. If your door is on the far left side of that wall, you are walking into the “Knowledge” area. If it is on the far right, you are walking into the “Helpful People” area. The grid stretches to fit the proportions of your home.
Can I use plants to activate the Bagua?
Absolutely. Plants represent the Wood element, which signifies growth, vitality, and new beginnings. Placing vibrant, healthy plants in the Wealth, Family, or Love corners is one of the most powerful and traditional Feng Shui enhancements. Just ensure the plants are healthy—dead or dying plants emit heavy “Yin” energy that will stall your progress.
